OVERALL PERSONALITY
When Lucien first met Emily, he was not only introduced to a prim and proper woman, but one who was quiet and shy as well. Oh, certainly Emily could be quite opinionated on subjects but she was careful to keep her tongue in check, clucking only to her sisters in private if something had truly irked her to the point where she felt she must mention it and recording it in her diary would not do enough to satisfy the need to speak. Over time she did gain more of a ‘voice’ and this development was falsely attached by people to newly discovered self-confidence; really, Emily had just learned when and where to express her opinions, particularly if they were negative remarks.
Emily was a person who wore her heart on her sleeve, and a jealous streak had once surprised her. She was honest and always sought the best in people whom she easily trusted, though this sometimes led to problems, and always believed in the good of man before considering the worst. There was a playful streak that ran alongside her imagination and remained with her until the end of her days. She was a kind and loving mother to her children and loyal partner to Lucien, who loved him fiercely. Though death became her greatest fear she knew that it could not be helped and struggled to suppress those thoughts and enjoy life while she had it.[/ul]
Background ★ Info,
History,
During the summer of 1815, Emily met a young man named Thomas who worked as farmhand for the Grays. The pair shared a mutual attraction for one another, much to the annoyance of the neighbour’s daughter, Mathilde, and this attraction eventually blossomed into a summer romance. Emily was considered a responsible, virtuous young woman and so it came as quite a shock to her parents when Samuel discovered her missing one night, only to find her in an indecent embrace with Thomas. Outraged, Samuel dismissed Thomas from his employment and though Emily had consented to her actions with the ex-farmhand, her family turned a blind eye, blaming him for manipulating poor, ignorant Emily. 1815 was also the year when enclosures on pastures were enforced and Lord Heathwood, who owned the land the land the Grays worked off of, first took notice of Emily.
The years passed and soon Emily’s scandalous affair with Thomas was forgotten; she consumed her days with work on the farm and spent her nights lost in her vivid imagination. Life was well until that fateful night in 1820 when Lucien Vilette dropped from the sky, altering the Grays’ lives forever. She believed he was an angel, he was fleeing from France; though she truly though Lucien had been sent from above (for no man had wings!), he slowly convinced her otherwise and when she learned of the circumstances which brought him to England, she offered him a place with her family until he could sort his own situation out; her father reluctantly granted him permission to stay.
Though she tried to deny it, Emily found she was developing feelings beyond that of friendship for Lucien and she soon discovered he cared for her too. For a time their romance was kept secret out of fear that Samuel would cast Lucien out just as he did Thomas; her sisters Olivia and Victoria eventually learned of it, as did the jealous Mathilde who wanted Lucien all for herself. It was only after they began their courtship that Emily learned of Lucien’s Vampirism, a fact which disturbed her for some time and ended up straining the relationship. She eventually came to accept this however, though she hated knowing they would be separated by death in the end; later in their marriage, Emily asked Lucien if he would turn her so that she may always be with him but he could not offer such a promise. Many secrets about Lucien were kept from the rest of the Grays, though Emily uncovered more and more of them as the year went on; eventually they did learn about his wings after the farmstead was attacked by bandits, but this was the biggest truth divulged to them and they accepted him as he was, despite his ‘deformity.’ By the start of the next summer, Lucien and Emily were forced to part when he set off looking for other members of The Chevalerie. It was then that Lord Heathwood made his move.
Lucien’s presence on the farm had drawn much attention, particularly from Lord Heathwood who had granted him permission to build a small home and marveled at his ability to thwart the prowling bandits that threatened his lands. He also noticed the growing bond between him and Emily and as soon as Lucien left to continue his own adventures without her, Heathwood swooped in, seizing more property from the Grays until they could do no more but offer Emily in exchange. Of course her family was not willing to part with her, the decision was made on her own and though Heathwood secretly confiscated the lands in hopes that she would have no choice but to become his bride, she never gave in, certain her angel (a term which she fondly bestowed upon Lucien) would return for her some day. For three long years Emily suffered abuse at the hands of Heathwood and those around him; she did manage to earn some of her family’s land back in numerous unpleasant ways, but it was never enough for them to survive and the Grays descended into poverty. During this time they frantically tried to find ways to contact Lucien but it was only at the end of the third year when they finally made contact with him and he rescued Emily from her plight. Ultimately the land was returned and a short time later, Emily and Lucien were married.
After the ordeal with Heathwood and a reunion with her own family, Lucien whisked Emily away from her former life, taking her travelling and introducing her to the world she had avoided for so long; when they did return, they settled down at Lucien’s old house on the Gray property where they led a peaceful life. A handful of children entered the picture and their eldest, Angelica, would go on to become a member of Sisters of the Blood after Emily passed away. Though Emily minded her appearance she was by no means vain but as age settled in she grew worried, at one point forbidding mirrors in the home. After all, Lucien retained his youthful looks and she became uncomfortable in her own skin because it was a constant reminder of her mortality; even though she fussed over her fading looks, no love was ever lost between them.
In the summer of 1873, Emily once again considered asking Lucien to turn her; the subject had never again been brought up in all the years that had passed since the first mention of it, but instead she opted for a promise and told Lucien that she would watch over him when they finally did part to tread along different paths of eternity. She died of old age that autumn with Lucien at her side. Emily’s grave can be found in a cemetery in Firbeck, which was once a village called Yonder.
