Madeline Elise Larkin
Gender: Female
Age/DOB: 22 / August 12th, 1990
Occupation: Freelance Musician and Clothes salesclerk
Race: Clairvoyant
Appearance;
Warm, inviting, and lovely are three words that most could see with the eye, and skin deep, those describe Maddy perfectly. Her gorgeous brown eyes radiant such things as happiness and are, generally, curious in nature. Many would argue that her eyes are her best feature, though if you asked Madeline herself, she would without a doubt tell you that her hair is by far the prettiest thing about her. It doesn't just hang from her head, it flows in gentle waves that are reminiscent of a golden mahogany brown ocean, if such a thing even existed. There is a mystique about her smile. It's formed by somewhat full lips and has an almost childish hint of playful appearance. Certainly, people will remember her smile. It simply lights up a room, and often does, though she would never admit it herself. Everything about her screams modelesque minus the anorexia, except her height. That is to say that she is really only average height, around 5'6”, and she does, in fact, like to eat. In other words, she's lithe and almost muscular, not skeletal in appearance.
Personality;
Now skin deep, Madeline might seem like a dainty, graceful beauty queen, but that could not be any farther from the truth. Behind that modelesque appearance is a girl who likes to play in the mud. Her main goal in life is to have fun, as evident by every action she makes, and those actions are far from girly. She is, in fact, quite a tomboy. She likes sports, in particular soccer, though she'd never reject playing any one of them, well, except of course, for golf. In her eyes, you have to sweat to call in a sport.
However much she loves to have fun, when it comes to sports, and any other competition in her life, Madeline gets serious about the game. It becomes more of an actual survival situation, the survival part being winning. Losing is simply not an option. She takes this competitive nature to all reaches of her life, including her love for music, and as an aspiring musician, that cutthroat nature is sometimes necessary to get gigs. Of course, being cutthroat competitive doesn't mean calling out vulgar insults and kicking people in the shins for Madeline. It means joking around that shes going to win and constantly smiling, but obviously those smiles are just to cover up how actually serious it is for Madeline, and the jokes mean much more than just getting a few laughs.
She won't stop at anything to get what she wants... Well she won't stop for anything except the dark. Can you blame her? The dark is scary. There are monsters in the dark... voices that she hears but knows she shouldn't be hearing, shapes that linger for mere seconds than vanish back from the nowhere of whence they came. In her heart, Madeline knows that those voices are in fact real, and that the shapes she sees darting in the corner of her eye are not fake but tangible beings that can think and feel... and do harm. Worst of all, though, is that she knows that no one else can see them, at least, no one she knows. She's different, undeniably and painfully different, which is something she has never wanted. People would think that she's crazy, which they might already with her extreme revoltance of the dark. She won't venture out into the night unless absolutely necessary,and , from her experience, there isn’t much that is absolutely necessary enough to make her take even a step out the door when the sun isn't shining. The dark and what she can only believe are ghosts, are not all she's afraid of however.
For being such a tomboy, her list of fears is actually quite long, although she won't admit any of them readily. Instead, she comes up with excuses of why she doesn't like swimming in the ocean. It's not because she's afraid of fish... that would just be stupid. Instead, she says she burns easily. A lie. Her list of fears and fibs stretches on to include spiders- she doesn't doesn't like the feeling of the web, that's all, grasshoppers- they just startle her, she is, of course, not really afraid, old houses- she just doesn't like the décor... it makes her... angry, and last but not least, death, of which she will actually tell you the truth about.
Now, her slightly paranoid self doesn't really make an appearance until the relationship status is at least friend. Before that, all people ever see is a loving girl who just wants to make in the word. She seems genuine, never telling a lie, although in truth, she is just very good at keeping her lies so close to the truth that they are true enough for most to believe. Day to day, her mood fluctuates, but in general, she is a joyful girl who loves to crack jokes, whether they're funny or not. She'll also laugh at said jokes whether they're funny... or not, and her laughter is catching as it is hilarious in itself. She kind of giggles in an almost childish, slightly jingly, tiny elf-ish way, which then erupts into laughter that seems to deep for her small self, and then, if she's laughing hard enough, the snorting starts. Once that starts, she's just a goner until you can calm her down, and let me tell you, that can be a little difficult sometimes.
Just like Madeline's gut-wrenching, cheek-aching, side-splitting laughter takes laughing to a whole new level, all of her emotions are a bit on the over-exaggerated side, well maybe a lot a bit. Upset her, she'll ball. Make her angry, and she'll explode into a terrifying demon of the devil himself, her fury unmatched by even the Hulk. In short, just be cautious around Miss Larkin. Try to beat around the bush if you're bringing up something sensitive, because jumping in might just be suicidal, not literally though. She's not a killer.
Everyone has a dark side, and Maddy is no exception. She has low self-esteem, which has gotten her into trouble. When you don't think you're pretty, you'll go anywhere with any guy, because, well, they just want to be friends, right? Wrong, and she had to find that out the hard way. Although, the hard way was cut short, as she got away before anything too serious could go down, the memory still clouds her mind, and in consequence, she doesn't trust guys. They have to earn that trust. Sometimes, it can take months, sometimes years, but for the lucky and truly pure in nature, it can take weeks. Because of her darker past, she doesn't like to speak about it, including the loss of her family, though that tale can be saved for her history.
To sum Madeline Elise Larkin up, she's a tom boy who has the emotional stability and self-esteem of a teenage girl, the competitive fire of a hockey player, the fears of a paranoid child, the ability to see wisps of ghosts and hear watery voices, the desire to always be happy, a love of coffee that is verging on obsessive, and the shamelessness to tell little white lies if it means keeping her secrets. Those secrets range from cheating of tests in college to how her family disappeared, of which she will only speak of to the best of friends. If there is anything else you might need to know about Madeline, I would suggest making a thread with her. She's definitely a character. Oh, and her favorite color is mint green. She is probably one of the clumsiest people you will ever meet. Most of the time, Maddy is like so silly. Everything is a joke to her, at least on surface level. She is addicted to soda and chocolate, and she is kind of a fitness freak sometimes. Maddy is a near-prodigy at piano and plays guitar with the best of them. She also has the singing voice to match, if not out do her playing skills.
Likes: Coffee, mint green, control – power and such, sunny days, music, guitars, piano, singing, soccer, any sports really, clothes, movies, adventures -as long as no swimming in oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, or ponds is involved- card games, rain, being with friends
Dislikes: Rude people, guys who belittle her, snobby women, people who make fun of her laugh, ignorant people, spiders, any body of water except pools, the dark, horror movies- they hit a little too close to home, being asked too many questions, the colors black, dark blue, dark red, and dark purple
Positives: Happy go lucky attitude on the surface, easy to talk to- if not a shifty looking male of course, cautious nature, sense of humor, enthusiasm, open mind, ability to detect ghosts, silly nature
Negatives: Quick to cry, yell, judge- because she's so emotional, competitive nature, cowardly, clumsy- not the trip ever once in awhile kind of way, but the walk into doors and fall down stairs kind of way, ability to detect ghosts, horrible past, paranoia about silly fears
Quirks: She has some crazy fears of some pretty odd things, her laughter is infectious in an annoying way, she doesn't go out in the dark except for dire reasons, pretty much a music prodigy who just isn't brave enough to go out for a record deal, still trying to figure out if she likes her gift of clairvoyance or not. But enough about Madeline Larkin's personality.
History;
Let's look at why she is who she is. Madeline grew up in Georgia in the United States. Her mom, Gail, was just 15 when Madeline was conceived and born. Already, Madeline was labeled a mistake by her grandmother and grandfather. Her mother, however, loved her with all her heart. She spoke constantly of a boy from England who had been visiting over the summer, her “one-true love” she would say. Of course, Gail's protective parents wouldn't let her leave the house until the age of 25, when Madeline was ten years old. Gail had kept in touch with her lover ever since, the boy from her teen years. He was gorgeous, or so she said, with strawberry blonde hair and the deepest brown eyes she'd ever seen. Gail herself was rather plain. She had light brown hair a green eyes, but a face that was just... normal. She didn't stand out in a crowd. In fact, it was her highly emotional, joking personality, much like Madeline, that made her even remotely stand out. Madeline truly grew up her mother's best friend, perhaps because they weren't far off in age, and, sadly, her mother was one of her only friends n elementary school. The problem with the other kids wasn't that they didn't like Madeline. She was funny, pretty, and loved to play in the dirt with the guys. The problem was that she talked about seeing wispy images that looked kind of like people. She grew up estranged from her fellow peers for a reason she couldn't comprehend, and a reason that her mother scolded. Gail said “Ghosts aren't real honey, stop talking like that or they'll take you away.” Whoever “they” was, Maddy didn't know, but she could only awesome her grandparents. They were wicked people. In reality, of course, her mother had meant mental rehabilitation clinics.
Luckily for Madeline, she was taught to be logical, and soon stopped sharing her encounters with ghosts. By the time she was in junior high, she was finally making friends, mostly because the elementary schools combined to form the junior high, and therefore, most people didn't know about “Mad Maddy.” Just as she was settling in, just as soon as she had finally gotten her first best friend, Gail told her that they were moving to Massachusetts. As imaginable, the two highly emotional females fought it out like opera singers, that is to say, that they're yelling became rambling and drawn out, almost like a song... a very ugly song. Eventually, Gail won, they packed their clothes, and moved to Massachusetts. Now, why would they do such a thing? Because, of course, Gail's “One true love,” the guy from Britain, was there. He'd moved to the United States for his job, although he never actually told Maddy what that was. She assumed it was something she didn't want to know about anyway since he worked at night. He had all kinds of technological equipment and talked about “spirits” with his friends. Needless to say, Maddy wasn't supposed to be eavesdropping, but she became curious. Perhaps he was like her. Perhaps, her father, whose name was actually Gaylord, something she was quite ashamed of saying in front of friends,could see ghosts just like her. Maybe he could even see them better than her.
Before she could ever find out, her father disappeared one night. It had been a night like any other. Gail fixed dinner while Maddy practiced piano; she was quite excellent, many would say a prodigy, but her father said that “music was a waste of time. You have to know someone to be someone, and they didn't no anyone.” Poor Maddy, however, never gave up her dream. She just kept practing. It was that night, as her fingers stroked the ivory keys of her grand piano to the sound of My Immortal, with her voice ringing like tears through the lyrics that she heard a knock on the door. Most days, people rang the doorbell, that is why the knocking still stands out so much to Madeline. Her voice softened and her pressure on the leys lightened as she listened intently to the voices at the front door. Her father was clearly one of the voices, he sounded flustered, almost angry, while the voice outside seemed calm, calm and reserved. The way the stranger spoke was with such eloquence that he could not possibly be of this time. Madeline believed that he must have been from England to sound like that, although what remote and medieval part of England, she could not imagine still spoke in such a flowing, formal way.
The conversation at the door lasted only moments, then the door slammed. The stranger was never invited in, but her father quickly ran upstairs. Madeline rose from the piano and hurried into the kitchen. Her mother, who was listening to her ipod while coking, had heard nothing. Madeline scowled and started to go upstairs, but an arm landed on her shoulder just as she reached the top. It was her dad. His eyes held sadness to them, a haunting sadness. His lips were drawn up into such a fake smile that it was obvious he was forcing himself not to cry. She will always remember him on that night, with her brown eyes so full of remorse, full of fear. She'd never been that close to him, but it was in that moment that she realized of much she loved him, and how much he loved her. “Daddy...” Was the only word she had managed to whisper before he'd gently pushed past her, shaking his head as if to say “no, no please don't ask.” She knew he couldn't tell her, and so, just sat at the top of the stairs as he went out the door, not even saying a word to his beloved Gail. Madeline was only 17 when she lost her father.
A long, hard year later, and another life event shook Madeline to her very soul. She was coming home from a football game with her friend Mike, a nice guy. They'd only been friends for a few days, but she was certain he was trustworthy. He asked to walk her home, and because her house was so close, only a couple of miles, she agreed. She;d never once imagined the terror that would befall her. They held hands as they meandered down the sidewalk, along a row of houses. They smiled and talked. Occasional laughter could be heard, though Madeline kept it under control. She never went past a giggle.
After awhile, she become so enchanted by their conversation that she didn't notice they weren't heading toward her house at all. As they chatted, a wispy figure appeared beside her. She immediately became worried. She could not ignore this ghost, just as she could not ignore Mike. The ghost was there, so she just kind of glanced at it from the corner of her eye. The part of it that almost looked like a tangled face spoke and said “Look where you are.” The voice was watery and echoed, as if from far away. It was always like this for Madeline. She wasn't exactly the most talented when it came to the affairs of spirits. “Pay attention.. hounengnybeeerrr.” She strained to hear the last word. Was it honey bear? Or was it hunting bear. Or perhaps.. housing here? Madeline shook her head, not meaning to, of course, and Mike raised an eyebrow. She could hear his rough voice in the background as she took the advice of the ghost and peered around her. Where was she? What was this place? There were dark brown brick walls all around her. It was dark, very dark, but she could see concrete steps leading up to the back of some sort of building, a warehouse perhaps. Mike was smile with concern at her, but as he asked if she was ok, his smile turned into a smirk. There was a car here, Mike's car. It was old and rundown. He was trying to get her to go toward it, using force. Her leg buckled beneath her and she nearly fell to the ground as panic set it. Her heart pounded in her ears like beating thunder and she knew that she had to get out. Somehow, that is exactly what she did. All she remembered from the panic stricken moment was following the sound of the same voice who had helped her realize that she was not heading home. It lead her home, lead her away from the dark, from Mike, and from his old run down car. He was such a good guy, someone she would never expect, and yet, he had betrayed her trust. Now, every guy was labeled a liar, a cheat, a threat to her safety, a murderer, an escaped prisoner. None of them were good in her book unless they earned it.
Two years after that, and she was already working as a waitress at a local comfort food restaurant, giving fake smiles to every customer she sat and handed a plate of piping hot fried chicken to. Days went by slowly, each one blending into the next, except for the few days she got to take off work and be around friends. Even then, though, most of her friends were realizing that they wanted to “be something,” whether that was a doctor, a lawyer, or a mechanic, and each disappeared to head off to a different school every soon. Soon, she only had her co-workers, a middle-aged lovey-dovey couple- her bosses- and a few grisly teens -fellow servers-, and her mom. Of course, that was about to change as well.
Her mother, who had been grief stricken since Gaylord had “disappeared,” (Madeline was certain that he had indeed died, though Gail would never accept that)took ill in the middle of the night. Maddy rushed her to a hospital faster than she had ever driven, and it was done in the dark, which was a mighty feat for her after her many ghostly encounters and her ordeal with Mike. A few days later, and the news was broken that her mother had pancreatic cancer,stage 3. They tried to regress the cancer, but it never went into remission. It never even got close. Instead, her mother's cancer became fatal, and Gail passed in the middle of the night, another reason for Maddy to hate the dark. It had taken her family.
Trying to get away from ever last memory of her family, her friends, her job, the horrors of her life, she moved to a new town. She moved to this town, Saint Claire, hoping to start a new life, a happier one, so she took a job at Hailey's Happening, a close store owned by a 24 year-old woman, Hailey, and her mother, Amelia. Hailey was her new best friend, and they got along quite swimmingly. The contrast between Hailey's complete girlishness and Maddy's tomboy antics was a good mesh. They sort of balanced each other out. Amelia was like Maddy's stand-in-mom, and she basically lived at their house on days when there were good shows on or she didn't have music gigs at the local bars and restaurants.
From one life event to another, Madeline;s life seems pretty horrible, but in reality, she was a happy girl. Now, how could that be? Perhaps because the horrible events in her life have showed her that she must make the best out of everything and live life to the fullest all the time for the littlest of things, like days at the park with friends, the movies with her best buds, soccer with the guys who made it on her a-ok list, gifts at Christmas, game nights with Hailey. And coffee. The girl definitely loved her coffee. She might even break down her trust wall for a cup of caramel macchiato. In fact, in her future, there was only one thing she was certain of. It wasn't that her best friend would always be Hailey Smelterson or that she would always loved the color mint green, but instead, that every single day, she would have coffee.
